Taggart
Taggart is a police drama series originally based on the character of Glaswegian police detective Jim Taggart from the city's Maryhill CID. The series was created in the early 1980s by Robert Love, controller of drama at Scottish Television, and Glenn Chandler, a former pathologist turned writer. Chandler chose the name after seeing it on a headstone in a Glasgow graveyard, in Maryhill.
Since the character of Jim Taggart first appeared in "Killer" in September 1983, and the Taggart series began in July 1985, it remained in production to become known as the longest running police drama on television.
Although Mark McManus died in 1994, and with him the lead character that gave the series its name, thanks to its supporting cast, both past and present, and its setting on the streets of Glasgow, the series has continued to develop, and delivered intriguing plot twists, gory murders, and red herrings. However, although it can still provide occasional examples similar to its original genius, the switch to a single episode within a 1-hour format between the 9 pm watershed and the News at Ten means it simply cannot deliver the depth of plot it once enjoyed through its longer format, which had 90-minute episodes and stories which spanned three episodes.
It seems that its longevity has allowed it to be split into three eras: the Jim Taggart Era from 1983 to 1994); the Michael Jardine Era from 1994 to 2002; and the Matt Burke Era which began in 2002 and saw the apparent end of the series in 2010.
Taggart was made by SMG Productions, SMG plc (formerly Scottish Media Group) being a Scottish media company, and distributed throughout the UK by ITV. Formerly STV (Scottish Television plc), SMG changed to its current name in 1996.
The final episode, Ends of Justice, was broadcast on Sunday, 07 November 2010, and was the 109th episode to follow Killer, which was not actually a pilot for the series although often referred to as such, but a stand-alone drama production which came to be the series' inspiration.
Chandler wrote every episode for the first eleven years of the series.

Featuring appearances by the main cast with their favourite memories of the series, cast, and characters over the years, a look at how the series was conceived from the play Killer, and how Mark McManus was seen as the natural choice for the lead role. The programme ends with a humorous look at scenes which didn't quite go as planned first time round.
Featuring in a number of episodes, the identity of the Gloved Hand was revealed during the documentary. Generally appearing just before an intended victim meets their fate, the Gloved Hand can be seen on its own, or holding the blunt object, gun, knife, axe, saw, or other handy device used to effect their despatch, including a simple push - the hand in The Glove was revealed as belonging to a member of the production staff, who compete amongst themselves for the chance to play the 'part' when called for.

Export
Taggart is also one of British television’s top exports, bringing Glasgow to an international audience. Since the series began it has been sold or broadcast in more than 80 countries around the world, from Iceland to New Zealand and from the USA to Japan. Both subtitles and dubbing are used to bring the characters to life for overseas audiences.
2009 Uncertainty
Although Taggart was STV's best known programme, it was neither commissioned nor paid for by STV, but by the ITV network. In July 2009, rumours persisted of Taggart's demise, and various claims and stories appeared in the media.⚠ [^BBC News. Rumours persist of Taggart demise. June 26, 2009.^]
STV stated then that ITV was yet to confirm any further commissions for the show that year, and that there was "no truth" in the suggestion Taggart has been axed. Although the group said it was "confident about the future of the series", the company's shares fell 14% on the news that the commission was yet to be confirmed. An ITV spokesman said future episodes were being produced, and it was noted that STV faced a £3 million cost if Taggart was not recommissioned, and had rearranged its bank facilities to cope with the possible impact of the show being dropped.
The End 2011
In 2010, financial issues were forcing ITV to reassess its offering, and Taggart was one of shows at risk.
An agreement between STV and ITV saw the series survive as a co-production, broadcast first in Scotland on STV, then later in the rest of the UK, on ITV1.
Despite continuing popularity in Scotland, the show's new format failed to improve viewing figures in the rest of the UK, and in May 2011, ITV announced that it had decided not to commission any further series.
The final episode, Ends of Justice, was broadcast on Sunday, November 07, 2010.
Episode formats
When it began in 1983, the show format was three one-hour episodes for each story, lasting 130 minutes without the adverts.
By 1999, this had changed to a two-hour stand-alone story, later shortened to 90 minutes.
By 2008, the show became a regular one-hour stand-alone story for the first time since 2003.
Scheduling of the show was also frustrating for viewers, with episodes often being fitted into scheduling gaps, rather than being regular features. Episodes might not be shown in consecutive weeks, or on set nights, so could be missed. While the episodes may be shot in blocks or series, this does not guarantee they are shown together, consecutively, or even in the order they were made. See the list below, where the episode numbers fall out out of sequence, and the dates are scattered. Periods of weeks or months between episodes were not uncommon.
Lost Taggart grave identified
In 2013, a newspaper published a story regarding the fate of the gravestone which inspired Chandler's choice of name for his character.⚠ [^Lost Taggart grave identified Retrieved May 19, 2013.^]
Information from the archives and special collections department of Glasgow’s Mitchell Library identified the grave as that of James Taggart, who died on March 17, 1925, and was buried in Lambhill cemetery. He was buried in lair E119, beside his mother Fanny B Taggart, who died in 1909, and his father Henry Taggart, who died in 1894.
By 2013, the plot was unmarked and the gravestone which inspired the first drama and subsequent series had gone. This is not unusual, as many graveyards are vandalised, stones are toppled, or become unsafe and are removed by the council if the families are no longer, or unable, to maintain the plots.
Taggart home for sale
In Match 2017, it was reported that the house Jim and Jean Taggart once lived in during the series was for sale, inviting offers over £430,000 for the property which is located in Percy Drive, Giffnock.⚠ [^Naebody move ... Scripts donated ScriptCoverPageImageCreditGCU.jpg
In 2018, actress Blythe Duff donated scripts from 95 episodes of Taggart to the Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) archives. The scripts will be available to the public together with memorabilia from the series, which ran for 27 years.
Duff, who played Detective Inspector Jackie Reid, made her first appearance in the series 1990.⚠ [^Actress Blythe Duff donates Taggart scripts to university Retrieved 20 October 2018.^]
Script numbering confirmation
When the table below (listing the episodes) was compiled, a number of online resources were used, and it became apparent that some disagreed with regard to the episode numbers.
The story about the script donation came with a small section of a script cover page pictured, and this give the number (15) and matching title (Death Comes Softly), so can be used to confirm the the numbering given in the FIRST column of the table would seem to be the correct series.
Episode list
Although the episode "Killer", which aired in September 1983, was to become the effective pilot for the Taggart series, it was not intended as such, having been conceived and produced as a single, stand alone police drama by STV (Scottish Television) for the ITV (Independent Television) network, and comprised three, 54 minute episodes shot on 16 mm film.
- This listing is a 'Best Effort' Air-Date order, but this is not guaranteed to be correct.
- Episode numbering begins with the first series episode, "Dead-ringer", as number 1.
- Episode numbers are as per the SMG site listing. No longer available online.
- Series-Episode numbering is usually as per IMDb.
- Season is usually as per TV.com.
- Air-Date is usually as per Fan site, but see Notes column too.
None of the sources are consistent or in agreement with one another. TV.com originally claimed its Episode Numbering was correct, but you will find that the number 45 is used twice (in a typo for 46), for Fearful Lightning and A Fistful of Chips.
Ensure the dashes (-) are used to format the Episode Part-numbers and Air Dates, as these are required to maintain table layout and consistency. S1-E1 represents Season/Series 1, Episode 1.
