Mullach Sgar radar station on the island of Hirta in the St Kilda archipelago is one of several which have occupied the island's hilltops over the years, beginning in the years of the Cold War with Operation Hardrock in 1957.
A related second station lies to the north, on Mullach Mor , and the two operate in conjunction with the South Uist rocket ranges to the east.
The stations are operated by civilian staff based in the military camp in Village Bay, and contain equipment which allows them to track test firings on the ranges by radar, and to record images of missiles in flight.
