Lenzie Air Raid Shelter
Records indicate that a World War II civilian air raid shelter was located at 5 Victoria Road, Lenzie, Kirkintilloch, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, G66 5??.
No further details are provided, and the location has not been visited, therefore it is unclear as to whether this refers to a specific structure, which may no longer exist, or an existing building which was used as an air raid shelter.
Although an 8 digit grid reference (NS65477175) is given for the location of the shelter is, implying the subject lies within a 10 metre square, 5 Victoria Road lies considerably further to the west. Rather than make any assumptions, the marker has simply placed at the given co-ordinates, pending any further location information.
One local account tells us this feature definitely existed until about 1995, and was until then a well known curiosity to the people of Lenzie. As a child, the contributor recalled having to fight the urge to climb over the low wall of the garden where it lay, and push their way through the bushes to get a better look. It was described as having the form of a very obvious grassy hump, easily seen through some fairly sparse bushes. Unfortunately, they never met anyone who had the chance to explore it, or record it, before it was filled in.
