- The very last such callbox in the United Kingdom was at the junction of the A836 and the A897, about 12 miles west of Thurso in the north of Scotland. The picture insert was taken in June 1992, in October 1992 the box was modernised and received nationwide coverage on the BBC news. Modern, automated equipment requires no buttons. The previous boxes required you to put your coins in the slot before making your call. If the person answered, you had to Press button A to connect the call, and your coins fell into the cash box. If the caller failed to answer, you had to press Button B to cancel the call - and your money was returned into a small tray.
