Decontamination Centre Kilmacolm
A Decontamination Centre has been identified to the south west of the village of Kilmacolm, on the north side of the B786.
The centre comprises two buildings believed to have been built during World War II, and is one of a number of such facilities constructed around the country at the time, in readiness for enemy gas attacks, however these attacks were never to arrive.
The buildings were subsequently converted into workshops, offices, and storage, so none of the original internal fittings are believed to remain. In the 1970s, the Kilmacolm Scouts stored go-carts in one building, and used the perimeter as a racing track. Nothing else is known of the building's history, so any further details would be appreciated.
The buildings are believed to have been associated with the radio transmitter at the Balrossie Mast, while this was still under control for the MoD.
