Searchlight Battery
The searchlight, or projector as it was also referred to at the time, would have been a carbon arc lamp (powered from a mobile generator, for a non-permanent site in a field), which would have produced an intensely strong white light. The operators would have used the beam to pick out individual enemy aircraft, giving the height and range finders a clear target for gun laying. Projectors would often work together, in groups of two or three, focussing on the same aircraft and making it difficult for the pilot to evade the cone of light they formed.
