After a chat with one of the rellys in Greenock I happened to pass the former Phillips Garage in Inverkip Road Greenock which still functions as a garage. I understand that this had a wartime roll and that antennas were sited at the rear. Wondering whether this was a wireless telegraphy station as listed in previous posts. Incidentally there is an existing antenna which I think would be Cellphone.I will post the location shortly. With apologies for being a lazy trout this afternoon.

There is a mobile phone base station shown near Gleninver Road / Sutherland Road and another by the bottom end (SW) of Old Inverkip Road.  Both seem to be 3G though the records are not 100% complete.  It does not show the one behind the old garage across the road, not sure whether they have wrong NGR or database not complete.

MB

PS If it is the garage opposite Old Inverkip Road then the only buildings in 1947 were two smaller ones at the end now a tyre place but on the spare ground East of there.  No sign of antenna or other military activity.  There is some disturbance over the railway bridge behind there but the road alignments seem different there, I would estimate it as behind the houses over the bridge.

Thanks for that JMB. On looking at SV the garage is indeed still owned by Phillips. There is an antenna with what looks like a repeater of some sorts which can be viewed from the railway bridge at Pennyfern Road situated at the rear of the garage. I understand that this area was originally called Smithston(The nearby cottages are named Smithston Cottages and I believe they were associated with ravenscraig Hospital(Staff Houses).
If anyone can have a look at the streetview architecture of the garage it may shed some light...any takers on this grey Sunday.Another fact on this was that we know that Ravenscraig was the Canadian navy Base during WW2.A possible link perhaps.
