Didn't trip over that one, it would have been a nice catch.
Only have the Caithness sites listed and marked.
I noticed there was a Google Earth kmz file of the ADS location, recently updated, but it is mainland only as well when I looked, so this may be lost if the page has gone
Hi, I'm researching Auxiliary Units in Scotland. My last message post was in Feb 2007, since then i have gained much information on the Auxunits from the very few surviving, former members i have interviewed throughout Scotland and further afield. I'm also looking for Operational Base (OB) locations, I have got all of the ones in Fife now and some in the East Lothian region down to the Scottish Borders as well as the Far North East coast. If anyone can advise of others, or, anything on the Auxiliary Units they may have come across while looking for other wartime defence structures/etc, I'd be most interested to hear form you. Many thanks.
I have fair bit of info on the Fife Aux Units. I knew some of the guys who were involved in it. Fife was a very extraordinary place in WW2 with extraordinary measures put in place, particulalry the very heart of Fife, Muchty/Cupar area and of course the Lomonds that provided a very good base...
There was an aux unit base found at the car park in the Lomonds not that long ago. All kitted out too with bunks, wash hand basins, brick lined too and some serious noisey stuff buried nearby.
It sounds as if you read the various article on Caithness on the Field Club website. A book on WWII in Moray has some pages on Auxiliary Units in that area.
There used to be a file online somewhere that listed officers involved with AUs on Lewis but I can't find it now despite looking several times. It has been suggested that there was something in the woods around Lews Castle.
What sounds like a AU hide was pointed out to me on Uist a few years ago.
I never heard the item myself but perhaps five years ago Radio Highland had an item on something that a man had found in woods on the Black Isle. The description fitted something connected with AUs but I asked around at a couple of museums and people in that area but could not find out any more. I am fairly sure there is nothing recorded there by the RCAHMS or HER so he mustn't have reported it to anyone officially.
David, Did you ever trace the two in Stirlingshire? An acquaintance of mine remembers a lot of Home Guard activity on the Polmaise Estate at Cambusbarron, but could just have been fieldcraft training. Point is, the estate has been empty since the '50s and there are hundreds of acres of woodlands used by the public. It wouldn't surprise me if there was something over there, though I've been looking for 30 years! Another contender (for me anyway) is the Wolf's Hole cave in an old quarry in Bridge of Allan, a few hundreds further west along Mine Road from the old copper mine on Airthrey Hill. The entrance is about 10-15 feet up, so a ladder or rope is required.
Have you ever heard mention of any AU activity out on the Hebrides, I have been told there is a hide in a old cemetery on the west side of the Isle of North Uist, keeps getting covered by sand so hard to find, but some one is going to show me its location. There was a lot military activity out here but I am not sure if any stay behind units would have served any purpose in such an isolated position.

Part of the Cemetery is, on the Machair land behind Solas , but I understand that the Hide was on the older side, I have looked for myself but could not find it.
Just a note for anyone that may not be looking or has not seen this, but there has been a recent burst in activity regarding the British Auxiliary Units on the WWW2TALK forum:
