I wonder if anyone has any books handy with details of Yester Castle? It lies in the Yester Estate in Gifford, East Lothian, and was built during the second half of the 13th century by Hugo De Gifford. It is the seat of the Marquess of Tweeddale, but the lands of Yester House have been in possession of the Gifford and Hay families from at least the 12th century. There's a simple question - and I warn you in advance that the answer is not available online, at least not definitively, so that's why a written reference is of interest, not online. The castle seems to have been built in both 1267 and 1297. But which is correct? I advise you not to try and do this from things transcribed online - you disappear in an endless loop of conflicts at the hands of the 'Cut and Paste' merchants who do not verify anything they slap into their pages. Even sources normally trusted disagree on this one as a result, and they have sadly not checked - probably they had a student assembling stuff just to keep them busy over summer |
